Beautiful but difficult

I found this needlework very difficult to do. The colors are difficult to see. I also found the directions hard to understand. I was very disappointed as I very much wanted to complete this for my home.

Different color cloth

I was wondering if this could be done on a darker cloth, say maybe, black Aida. It’s beautiful the way it is, but just wondered if changing the color would be okay.
