Where to start....

I am seeing that some people start in the center of the pattern where others start in the upper left corner. What do you suggest? Also, I am conflicted on the stitching.. do I do my row with //// first, then go back to finish the stitch, or do I do each X first... Help! Thanks, Lisa

Fabric Size

So this pattern is 18 count and I want to do 14 count. However, in using the floss calculator, would need a piece 20x25. Where can I get a piece this size? And also a wooden frame to use.. my eyes aren't the best so I'm thinking it would be hard to stitch in 18 count on black.
