Difficulty level & perforated paper

I have not crossstitched in years and was still basically a beginner when I stopped. I have never worked with perforated paper, and nothing in the product description mentions a difficulty level or the experience level targeted by the product maker. What problems might I encounter if I attempt it? Would it be possible to use 14 count aida instead of perforated paper? Or is this project too hard for a beginner?
