Stitched with variegated floss and it is a show stopper

I have not completed the project, but have finished the head and part of the neck. So far the pattern is very clear and easy to follow and I like how it looks. I am using the same yellow that the pattern called for, but got a blue cloth instead (I couldn't find the green- but stumbled upon the blue and chose it instead), which I think looks really nice so far!

What is the origin of the tribal animals..does the pattern have a special meaning. Just curious. Thanks

I am new to cross stitching. I have done one other project that turned out..ok. But I would like to do this tribal giraffe and maybe more tribal animals for my child's nursery. There was no fabric choices for this giraffe. Would I use that color background or white? Also, same choice for the other animals I choose?
